Workout of the Day

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Here we have Marty and Sef working the back squat together. In his book “The Westside Barbell Book of Methods,” Coach Louie Simmons talks about overcoming plateaus. He says that there are 4 reasons for plateaus: physiological, psychological, technical and exercise selection. He speaks to the psychological point thusly: “To win, you have to put yourself through hell. Have training partners that want to kick your ass all the time (during the workout)...” We look for things that we can measure ourselves against. Whether it be a training partner, the clock, a previous personal record or some inner demon, we all have something to battle during our workouts. This is critical if we are to see real and tangible results.

Marty, Sef and Dan D. are constantly giving each other a hard time and leaving snide remarks to each other on the board. While this is usually meant as playful jest, you can see when they train together that they are all working hard beat each other. The benefit is threefold: They make adaptations quicker (i.e. gain strength), it gives them raison d’etre, and adds a little fun to their training. It also creates a bond and a drive to see the others in the gym succeed. A good training partner is critical. It is one of the reasons that we keep score. Keep up the good work and meet your goals together.

  3. Steph, you are my inspiration each morning. It is good to have someone push you when you are tired. You Rock :) I love the idea that we push eachother through the early 6 AM workout, that will make us all stronger. I will take Wall Ball over Box Jumps any day. 12:16

  4. you guys are so nice!
    thank you—
i think that it is so great that we all inspire each other with our strengths, intestinal fortitude, and friendship. we’re all so different, but there is that similar thread in all of us that keeps us coming back for our morning torture sessions! wall balls are really hard!

  5. It doesn’t help when the ball is precisely 33.775% of your over all body weight either…;0)

    — John Brown ·

    — DD ·

  7. 12:14 45# snatch. I am inching my way up on these snatches, same as the cleans.

    — caitlin ·

  8. Caitlin – Thats the way you do it, Baby! Great job. I wish I could have seen it.

I know there is no way we could ever convince you guys of this, but the workout does not actually get any easier as the day goes on. However, it is awesome to see so much energy coming out of that 6am class. You guys set the tone for the day and give the rest of us something to chase!
